What is a basal implant?
This is an ideal type of dental implant for people with bone structure problems. Even though this type of implant has been around for many years, it is relatively little used because it is very technical. It is placed differently because it is on cortical bone which mineralizes and regenerates more easily.
Indeed, only expert dental surgeons are able to carry out its installation. Its principle is simple, it is longer and is installed directly into the « hard » bone. It also provides an almost immediate response to your care.
Why a basal implant?
When the bone height is too low and sinus lift is complicated, this is one of the best solutions. If a patient is edentulous, this is one of the most suitable techniques.
But also for people suffering from sinusitis, because the basal implant prevents them from complications resulting from a Sinus lift. This avoids a heavy bone graft and saves time on care. The possible risks of complications and infections are drastically reduced because it is in the deep layer of the bone.
Many sites say that it is risky and that you should avoid this type of implant, why?
Very few dental surgeons accept to place this type of implants because it requires a particular knowledge, which many practitioners do not have. This type of implant is not fixed on the same bone as « classic » implants and it requires a general anaesthesia (which implies a panoply of medical tests before the operation). However, it should be noted that basal implantology is much less traumatic than most grafting techniques, as it is less invasive.
On the other hand, patients cannot be managed in a chain and the operation is long. Moreover, it is not the most profitable solution for the dentist, he treats fewer clients. It is true that a few more implants have to be placed, but he can only handle a few clients per day. As a result, some clinics simply refuse to use this technique because of this.
What are the benefits?
The answer is very simple. The operation takes longer, but the treatment is quicker and saves you a trip. In addition, the basal bone does not resorb, so implantology has a better chance of success and durability. Secondly, the chewing load is better distributed because you already have all the implants in place and the basal bone is much stronger. The mandibular muscles are used in a healthy way and this prevents possible atrophy.
But that’s not all, you will avoid many of the pains that conventional implants can cause and you will have a proportionally lower risk of complications. Dr. Gábor Baráth has been placing these implants for decades and he also offers custom-made implants to perfectly fit the shape of your teeth.
But does it cost more then?
This is a preconceived idea and above all a commercial argument of clinics that do not offer this type of implant.
First of all, the price of the treatment will depend on what you need and especially on what you want to do. Of course, a general anaesthetic is required and there are more implants to be placed, but the Sinus lift is not free either (about 500£ per operation). As you can see, you have to take everything into account when you do your dental work.
For example, in the case of a fully edentulous patient, you will save around £3300 on the total cost of treatment compared to conventional implants. Not to mention that you have one less trip to make (hotel and meal costs).
Basal or conventional implants?
The choice is not ours but yours. If you do not have bone atrophy, you can receive conventional implants. But if you suffer from a lack of bone structure, have severe periodontal conditions, are diabetic or a smoker, are edentulous, or have problems with scarring, then we will advise you to use this type of implant.
Of course, this is subject to the advice of the doctor, as it is he who inspects your mouth before anything else.
So how many stays do I have to make?
One less compared to basic implantology. So it’s quite interesting on all levels. The main advantage is that you will leave with a fixed prosthesis and not a removable one, thus limiting many inconveniences.
You will save on many things, while receiving quality care. It will take 4 to 6 months of healing before you receive your permanent teeth. Dentaphil will help you to book your stay as you wish. Please feel free to contact us to find out more. We hope to make you smile again soon.
