Scaling

Where does tartar come from?

It is a solidification of food residues and bacteria present in the mouth. It is a calcification of bacterial plaque, which is normally removed when you brush your teeth. The amount of tartar depends entirely on your saliva and dental hygiene. Tartar can protect the surface of your teeth, but it can also cause problems for your gums or bone structure, because tartar contains bacteria. Untreated tartar causes bad breath and can quickly develop into gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).

Do I really need a scaling? It’s just cosmetic, right?

Having beautiful teeth is satisfying, but scaling is not just about aesthetics, far from it. Poor dental hygiene is associated with cardiovascular and stroke risks. Inflammation of the teeth is a significant source of bacteria. Scaling is recommended at least once a year, in addition to brushing your teeth twice a day. Regular dental hygiene and scaling improves your life expectancy.

How often should I have my scaling done?

Good dental hygiene (brushing your teeth after each meal) helps to avoid tartar. However, we are not all equal when it comes to tartar, some people have saliva that will encourage the development of tartar. In addition, some parts of your teeth are difficult to access. Regular scaling is therefore necessary to avoid periodontal disease. Tartar should not be taken lightly as it is one of the primary factors in tooth loss.

So when should I go for my scaling?

The answer is very simple. As soon as tartar has formed, it must be removed. Ask your dentist for advice, he or she can tell you. At Dentaphil, we perform scaling for 80% of patients.

How is scaling performed?

It is a medical procedure that consists of removing tartar stuck to the root (under the tooth) and to the crown (visible part of the tooth).

There are several techniques, the oldest is manual scaling, with a tool called a curette. Nowadays, the most commonly used technique uses ultrasound to break up the tartar deposits, this technique is very effective under the gum and avoids the pain of a pick. The time and intensity of the procedure depends on the condition of your plaque.

At our dental clinic in Budapest, we use gentle methods to make your scaling as comfortable as possible. The aim is to protect your gums while removing tartar.

I am a smoker, will I get more tartar?

Tobacco is no friend of your teeth. Bad breath and loss of taste is the least of the problems. Smoking causes dry mouth, so your saliva is less effective in protecting your teeth and this increases the risk of cavities. Smoking will also stain your tartar and make it more visible. A smoker needs to have his or her teeth cleaned more often because tartar can more easily get under the gums.

Does scaling remove stains from teeth?

No, this is only the first step. In order to treat the stains, polishing must be carried out after descaling. This means mechanical removal of stains and debris with a suitable tool.

I have implants, I need a scaling?

Tartar gets everywhere and you need to pay attention to your dental hygiene, even with implants. They need your attention! During a check-up of your implants, the dentist may decide that scaling is necessary to protect your implants. Indeed, they require precision and special tools designed to clean the implants in an optimal way without damaging it.
